Architects in Birmingham
‘Rob is the first architect I’ve worked with that I have no regrets about choosing. He is very professional, approachable, and easy to talk to. The most important thing is that he is always reachable and responsive, which gave me a lot of confidence during the process. The plans he drew were approved by both the council and Bournville Village Trust without any issues. He didn’t make a single mistake, and everything was handled smoothly. I definitely recommend Rob — a true professional and a pleasure to work with.’

Design and Planning in Birmingham
Birmingham has one of the most varied residential contexts in the region, from Victorian and Edwardian suburbs to inter-war estates, Conservation Areas, canalside neighbourhoods and dense urban infill sites.
The strict residential policies applies city-wide and gives detailed guidance on residential extensions, privacy, daylight, scale, streetscape, landscape and future-ready design. For householder work, the Council specifically points applicants toward its guidance on neighbour impact and residential additions.
Heritage controls are also significant. Areas including Moseley, Bournville, Edgbaston, Harborne and Selly Park include Conservation Areas, with several subject to Article 4 Directions that remove normal permitted development rights for certain alterations.
Birmingham’s and Bournville Village Trust’s recently adopted Historic Environment SPD also places renewed emphasis on understanding significance, archaeology and how low-carbon improvements can be integrated sensitively into historic buildings.
Our approach is to understand the particular character of each neighbourhood first, then develop a contemporary response that works with the house, street and wider city context rather than relying on a standard extension formula.
